Malta Guide

Introduction

Malta is an independent country composed of three populated islands in the Mediterranean Sea, 93 kilometers south of Sicily. With an area of 316 square kilometers, its population in 2000 was 390,596. Malta is also the name of the main island, the others being Gozo and Comino. The capital is the crusader town of Valletta, in northeast Malta, founded in 1566; it was preceded by Mdina, ten kilometers to its west, in central Malta Island. Other major cities are Birkirkara and Qormi. The main tourist towns are St. Julian and Sliema, on the coast, northwest of the capital. The two resort towns are Malta's shopping, entertainment, dining and hotel center. A third town, Paceville, is the party capital.
